What is NEAR Protocol?

Near Protocol (NEAR) is the native token of the scalable NEAR Protocol blockchain network, which provides a developer-friendly platform for decentralized applications. NEAR tokens are used for paying network fees and can also be staked to enhance network security.

Originally founded as "NEAR.ai" in 2017 by Ilya Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov, the project initially focused on researching program synthesis (automated software development).
